Reading by context
Reading instruction can be tricky business. It is an area of teaching that has recently been surrounded by controversy. Many students have been taught to read using context clues rather than phonics (sounding) which can be a real problem when context clues are missing. Some students learn to lean so heavily on context clues that they don’t sound out at all, even when instructed to and this is a problem I faced in my class with students coming from other schools.
What was needed
I wanted to create an app that would help students practise sounding out without any context clues. This presumes that students have a decent vocabulary knowledge which they recognise by sound but do not recognise these words in print. It also assumes they have/are receiving phonics instruction so they can sound out the letters.

What I created to support students
The app I developed gives students nonsense words to read. They should practise sounding out four-letter words one at a time, starting with the first letter, then the second letter and so on. Some of the words are real words. When the student recognises a word by sound, they should select it and they receive points.
Where is it available?
I have made this available on my website and I welcome you to use it! Please let me know if it has been helpful for you.
